Description: ALAN ROSS (1948-) Alan Ross' photography hangs in collections and galleries around the country and internationally. A master printer and educator, he leads workshops in locations ranging from Yosemite to China. Whether he is driving down the road looking for photographs, or setting up an intimate still life in his studio, Ross' photographs are a pure visual and emotional response to subject matter, executed with an exacting eye and superior technical skill. Ross' photographs primarily describe the beauty of the western United States in images of dramatic deserts and mountains, cloud-swept skies, and radiant light. Other photographs convey the soul of specific environments; a wooden cross in front of a church door in Cañoncito, New Mexico, bread ovens in La Cienega, New Mexico, a burned church in Las Mesitas, Colorado. Ross photographs primarily with an 8x10 view camera, but also produces exceptional work with smaller format cameras. A master printer, he makes his own prints in his darkroom in limited editions of 100 to 150. His photographs are usually available as 16" x 20" prints. A few images are offered in 11" x 14" and 20" x 24" sizes. After working in a San Francisco advertising photography studio, Ross met Ansel Adams who hired him to assist his photographic workshops in Yosemite. By 1974 Ross was working full-time for Adams and had become the exclusive printer of his Special Edition Prints, a position he still holds some thirty years later. Ross was Ansel Adams' Photographic Assistant in Carmel for five years where he was integrally involved in Adams' books, teaching in Yosemite, and production of fine prints. He has also been the exclusive printer of Ansel Adams' Special Edition negatives for over twenty-five years and continues to make reproduction prints of Adams' other images for the Ansel Adams Publishing Rights Trust.
