Paula Chamlee returned to college in the 1980s majoring in the visual arts to finish a degree she had begun in the 1960s in the performing arts. She earned a B.F.A. in painting in 1988. During this latter part of her college career, she discovered photography and quickly found direct involvement with the world outside the studio to be irresistible. In the 33 years since, she has traveled extensively, making photographs both in the United States and abroad.

Chamlee has been the recipient of several grants, including one from the Leeway Foundation for "Excellence in Photography." Her photographs have been widely exhibited in museums and galleries, and her photographs are in numerous collections, both public and private in the United States and abroad. She is collected in over 40 museums in the United States, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, High Museum, San Diego Contemporary Museum of Art, George Eastman House, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and the Library of Congress.

Her most recent solo exhibition in 2018 at the Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, PA features her photographs combined with her paintings, drawings, collages, and assemblages.

She has had seven monographs of her work published. She has taught workshops in photography in 11 countries around the world.

More recently, Chamlee has completed a large body of new works on paper—paintings, drawings, and collages made in her studio in Bucks County, PA. In addition, she continues to work on a series of studio still lifes in large-format (8x10-inch negatives), along with other photographing projects outside the studio. She continues to work with an 8x10-inch view camera in both color and black and white for contact prints as well as drum-scanned negatives for to making large inkjet prints.
