Bell was an important contributor to the early American landscape photographic tradition. He was a member of the Wheeler Expedition of 1872 ("the U.S. Geographical and Geological Explorations and Surveys West of the 100th Meridian"), during which he made this image. It can be found in the collection of Duke University in the same (11" x 8") scale, and in the form of a stereoscopic view in the George Eastman House collection. Here, the Colorado River glints with sunlight, as seen from an elevated view. Good condition. Verso reads, in pencil: A. Bell, Grand Canon [sic], Colorado River, Near Paria Creek, Looking West.
