Translation of the title is: Principal Types of Different Human Races In the Five Parts of the World. These photographs show a series of sculpted wax heads representing the various races of the world. There are five albumen prints - one per continent - with 16 heads each. The wax heads were sculpted by J.M. Heuser under the direction of Dr. Baer (this is noted on each print). They were displayed at the 1862 International Exposition in London, where they received a medal. This medal is referred to on each of the prints: "Médaille a Londres, exposition de l'instruction publique 1862."
The detail image is of "Oceania."
