About This Image

A rare exhibition size print. From the series of the 1942 exhibition "Die Schönheit der Diskretion" (The Beauty of Discretion) in Germany, titled in ink on the mount, with the exhibition label on the verso. Mount is 63.5 x 49 cm.

Albert Renger-Patzsch wrote, "The attraction is that when one takes photographs, one is obliged to adjust one's focus to a relatively small organism, like a flower, one is obliged, as it were, to look as an insect does."

The artist, Albert Renger-Patzsch (Würzburg 1897-1966 Wamel bei Soest) studied chemistry from 1919-1921. He took up photography from 1920 onwards, becoming a free-lance photographer after 1925. From 1933-1934, he was professor at the Folkwang School in Essen. Then from 1940-1944 he served as a war reporter. Numerous prizes and awards.

Renger-Patzsch began his career as a photographer in the photographic department of the Folkwang Verlag (known as Auriga after 1924), which was led by Ernst Fuhrmann, Renger-Patzsch's spiritual mentor.

The main focus of his work after 1921 was plant photography: uncontrived, revealingly precise representations of plant forms. Individual plant photographs by Renger-Patzsch, made between 1922 and 1925 during his time at Folkwang/Auriga, are known from the epoch-making volume of photographs, Die Welt ist schön (The World is Beautiful).

Shipping and insurance costs will be added to the price and must be paid for by the buyer. Pennsylvania buyers must pay appropriate local sales tax. International clients are responsible for their VAT and other custom's oriented charges.
