About This Image

An unusual subject matter for an autochrome. Signed and titled on strip of paper to left of image. He was an amateur photographer, who was a music professor by profession. Born Richmond, Surrey about 1867, Kelsey died in Seaford, Sussex in 1939. His work was exhibited by the Guildford Photographic Society in the U.K. and at the Royal Photographic Society Exhibitions in London from 1899 to 1910. He is listed in the George Eastman House database and is said to have been active from the 1890s until about 1911. He apparently lived in Eastbourne in Sussex on 22 Upper Avenue. This photograph was probably taken from the upper window of this location. My thanks to Ben Franks at the Seaford Museum for some of this information.
