Herbert Ponting captured some of the best known imagery of the Antarctic. He spent his early years traveling through Europe and Asia, photographing landscapes and peoples for American magazines, periodicals and newspapers. In 1910 he was assigned the position of official photographer and cinematographer for Captain Robert Falcon Scott's British Antarctic Expedition. He worked in Antarctica until 1914.
