John Scudder II was the son of the famous missionary of India, Dr. John Scudder and was born in India. He was the youngest of eight brothers and two sisters. He attended theological seminary in New Jersey and then studied medicine. He was married in 1861 and returned to India with this wife this same year. They went to work at the Arcot Mission, which had been founded in 1853 by his brothers.
