About This Image

There is a strong three-dimensionality--actually, an almost eerily lifelike quality—to these two beautiful ambrotypes (possibly relievo). Judging from their grouping here they depict a mother and her two young daughters. The girls have exquisite detailing and hand-coloring--from the pleats in their dark satin dresses to the glint of gold in their hanging earrings, not to mention the lifelike blush to their cheeks. The mother, to the left, wears a gold-bordered broach at her throat, and shows true-to-life qualities of another nature: namely, the dark circles under her eyes.

The case of this piece is in extremely good condition. It is a quarter plate of Sir Roger deCoverly and the Gypsies, made by A. P. Critchlow and Company. It is a very scarce piece, and is illustrated in "Union Cases - A Collectors Guide to the Art of America's First Plastics" by Clifford and Michelle Krainik with Carl Walvoord (1988), page 46.
