About This Image

A true Civil War-Era keepsake, directly from the hands of the young men attending Albany Law School from states ranging from Maine to Illinois. Each of the pages are illustrated with a hand-pasted photo and is inscribed by the sitter with such information as political party, hometown, religion, and even words of admonition/encouragement—sometimes penned in ancient Greek. There are 124 Albumen photographs in all. Ten of the individuals have been identified as soldiers serving in the war.

Students include: Thomas Young, a Yale graduate at the age of 19, who joined the Army in 1865 (the year he entered Albany Law School) serving first as a lieutenant and then as a major for the 127th colored troops; The Reverend Charles R. Strong; Martin V. Parker, a soldier and farmer from Illinois; and Merritt King, who fought in twenty-two battles in the Civil War and after graduation went on to create a highly successful law career in Tompkins, NY.

Leather binding with ornate, gold-embossed cover. Fairly good condition overall, with some wear of leather at edges, and some detachment of leather at spine.
