About This Image
One hundred and twenty-six pages have thoughtfully been hand-numbered in this leather-bound, gold-embossed keepsake book—one for each student in the graduating class of 1865. On the frontispiece its owner, Daniel C. Reeve, signs his name. His fellow classmates have each pasted in their photo, along with personal inscription in ink. Religion, political affiliation, home town, and often a phrase of encouragement/admonition appear on each page, along with the man's likeness. A professor of Reeve's is the first to comment, with the phrase "The battle of life must be fought uphill"/([Wa?] Harris/Albany/May 4. 1865). Lewis Hanback a self-described "Orthodox/Rebublican" writes "The best treasure is a true friend." A helpful index of the class of graduating students from 1864-65 has been tipped into the back of the volume, and is cross-referenced by page number in pencil.
A fascinating keepsake of the Civil War Era, in good condition with some wear in leather at edges.
