The black dog in this smartly dressed man's lap overshadows the figure of a small child, barely visible on the far left of the plate. Some hand-coloring in the man's cheeks. Good clarity.
This is a very early tintype, and what makes it unusual is the partially visible, embossed patent mark that appears on it - upper center, verso.
The tintype is in an ornate gold mat and a full case.
