About This Image
Ivorytypes are a very rare photographic process in which a positive image is printed to look as though it is on ivory. Patented by J.J.E. Mayhall in 1865, the process required a print be laid on a glass plate and hand tinted before white wax is heated over the print, making it completely penetrated by the wax. Once cooled, the wax acted as a secure bind between the print and the glass.
