This unusual ambrotype was safeguarded inside a silk brocade pouch with Buddhist designs that accompanies the photograph. The pouch is 4 X 6.5 inches (closed) and opens to 6.5 X 11.25 inches.
This portrait was transformed into a mourning photograph. The back of the case has been completely blackened to signify the man's death. And, there is a scribble of kanji writing on the front of the case, which is either scratched out words, or some type of other symbolism. The kanji writing inside the case lid does not seem disturbed, although it is difficult to decipher. Very rare piece.
