About This Image

From the late 1920s through the 1980s Mexican artisans have made these photo sculptures (fotoescultura), which are usually in elaborate, wood frames. They were popluar in Mexico, and in U.S. towns near the Mexican border.

These photo sculptures give a relievo effect, as they float between two pieces of glass with no background.

This fotoescultura was exhibited at the Izu Museum in Japan in 2010

Museo de Arte Popular in Rancho Jaguar, Guanajuato, Mexico has examples of these "photo esculturas."
