About This Image

Photographer has written "Photo Brassaï" and marked "Pic. 132" in his hand on the verso. Passes black light test and doesn't glow. See: Brassaï, "Conversations with Picasso", (Gallimard, 1996), p.149; Alex Novak, For the Love of the Image: A Selection of 110 Photographs, p.78, pl.80.Brassaï quoted Picasso as saying at the time, "I'll mimic the artist. But I need a model." He then proposed that Jean Marais play the role of languid woman. Marais was a French actor and director. Marais starred in several movies directed by Jean Cocteau, for a time his lover and a lifelong friend, most famously Beauty and the Beast (1946) and Orphée (1949). Marais played over 100 roles in film and on television, and also was known for work in other areas of artistic expression, such as writing, painting and sculpture.
