About This Image

See: Anne de Mondenard, La Mission Héliographique, (Edition du Patrimoine, 2002), p.90.

Edouard Baldus showed great ingenuity in his desire to restore the perspective of the Cloister Saint-Trophime, despite the technical constraints imposed by the close spaces. The arcades and the pillar in the foreground were each photographed on their own, and their negatives were printed together to produce the final print, much like a puzzle. This audacious montage is undoubtedly the reason why the photograph was refused by the Commission for Historic Monuments. This refusal and the difficulty in making prints from so many multiple negatives helps explain the rarity of these prints on salt paper.

Baldus, however, opened the way for a new use of negatives. Later, Gustave Le Gray was inspired by Baldus to make his prints of seascapes from multiple negatives. Baldus later made copy albumen prints of this image to avoid the difficulty in printing from so many different negatives.

Shipping and insurance costs will be added to the price and must be paid for by the buyer. Pennsylvania buyers must pay appropriate local sales tax. International clients are responsible for their VAT and other custom's oriented charges.
