Ezra 'Elmer' Keene was born in Osberton near Worksop in Nottinghamshire in 1853 to a Quaker family. During the 1870s he switched from being a miller and baker to being an artist and photographer. Elmer married a Yorkshire girl, Eliza Darlow, and they had 11 children, four of whom became artists. The family moved to Leicester in 1901, where he worked primarily as a painter until about 1914. His romanticized moonlit views and evocative landscapes proved commercially successful. Prints, postcards and stereo views based on his paintings were sold in Europe and the United States. Keene died there in 1929.
