A woman of her time, with finger-waved, bleached-blond hair and novel, backless dress, gives us a double impression of her stylishness. Her hair and skin glow, which may have been the point of the photo.
Franz Fiedler is listed in Auer and Auer and the George Eastman House databases. He was born March 17,1885 in Mahren, Czechoslovakia and died February 5, 1956 in Dresden, Germany. His work spanned pictorialism to modernism and he was active from 1897 to 1956.
He had a commercial studio in Dresden that was fire bombed during WWII. He worked on advertising and portrait photography to pay the bills. He first learned photography at his father's studio in Olmutz.
Fiedler exhibited in 1910 at the 55th Annual Royal Photographic Society exhibition. In 1922, he exhibited at the 5th International Photographic Salon of the Camera Pictorialists of Los Angeles; in 1927 at the 8th Annual Salon of Pictorial Photography of the Albright Art Gallery and at the 14th Annual Salon of Photographic Art at the Carnegie Institute; in 1929 at the International Ausstellung des Deutschen Werkbunds Film und Foto; and in 1938 at the First Photographic Exposition of the Guild of Photographic Dealers.
In the 1920s, he published a folio of his work in both silver prints and photogravure entitled "Narre Tod Mein Speilgesell, which had an introductory text by Thea Girandelli.
H. Grundwald wrote a book entitled Franz Fielder und seine Zeit, which was published in Czechoslovakia in 1960. Contemporary Photographers also lists Fiedler's information. The Royal Photographic Society, the George Eastman House, Dartmouth College's Hood Museum of Art and Syracuse University's Art Collection list his work in their inventory.
