Tamamura was born in 1856. His family had served in the Rinnoji branch of Hoshino as the head priests for the imperial family since 1654. In 1867 he apprenticed under Kanemaru Genzo, and in 1874 opened his first studio. He had a successful career selling albums for export and cabinet cards. He did commissioned projects for a Japanese tea company, and illustrating Captain Francis Brinkley's book series, "Japan: Described and Illustrated by the Japanese". Portraits in Sepia, p. 277.
