About This Image
Four images are included in this intriguing lot: photolithographs and a title page with text from the "National Academy of Sciences. Vol. III. Fourteenth Memoir. On a New Craniophore For Use In Making Composite Photographs of Skulls." As documented here, in image as well as text, this box-like contraption was employed—all the better to photographically document a wide variety of skulls. The images are a warm reddish-brown, with "skull" and without. Titles and some text appear under each.
