About This Image

William Makepeace Thackeray (July 18, 1811 – December 24, 1863) was an English novelist of the 19th century. He is known for his satirical works, particularly Vanity Fair, a panoramic portrait of English society.

During the Victorian era Thackeray was ranked second only to Charles Dickens, but he is now much less widely read and is known almost exclusively for Vanity Fair, which has become a fixture in university courses, and has been repeatedly adapted for the cinema and television.

In Thackeray's own day some commentators, such as Anthony Trollope, ranked his History of Henry Esmond as his greatest work, perhaps because it expressed Victorian values of duty and earnestness, as did some of his other later novels. It is perhaps for this reason that they have not survived as well as Vanity Fair, which satirises those values.

Born in Italy, Caldesi lived and worked in England (13 Pall Mall, SW), In partnership with Montecchi and later with Blandford, Caldesi produced many early photographs of art treasures in English collections and among his best known are the Photographs of the Gems of the Art Treasures Exhibition held in Manchester in 1857 and his Photographic Historical Portrait Gallery published by Colnaghi in 1864. In May of 1857, Caldesi and Partner were summoned to Osborne on the Isle of Wight to undertake a series of Photographs of the Royal Children. L. Caldesi & Co. succeeded the other studio iterations in mid-1862. The image of Thackeray had been taken about 1860 by Caldesi.
