About This Image

The shadow of the photographer, as well as that of his camera on tripod, is beautifully captured in the foreground of what is otherwise a scene of destruction. The words, in pencil on verso, "St. Joseph's Church," identify the once-impressive edifice.

This image that may have been taken after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Presumably, the shadow is of either of the studio photographers, Lovejoy or Foster.

Imprinted on recto of mount: LOVEJOY & FOSTER, 309 W. RANDOLPH ST. CHICAGO.
