About This Image

Monogrammed and titled in the photographer's hand on the recto with wide margins on the print.

Born in Bruges in 1882, Ludovic Fraeys de Veubeke was an amateur photographer who experimented with alternative processes, as did other pictorialist photographers. According to family members, he also experimented a lot with 3-D photography (less art, more family and travel, including Egypt at the beginning of the last century). He kept his darkroom under the staircase in his castle.

Most of his images are of his native city of Bruges where he lived until he died in 1952.

According to the "Directory of Photographers in Belgium, 1839-1905 (Antwerp, Fotomuseum), he was a lawyer, president of the bar, and deputy judge at the Bruges court of first instance. He was also a member of the influential "Cercle Photographique of Bruges. He both monogrammed (a backward "L" and a "V") and signed his photographs (Lud. Fr.). Besides being a photographer and a lawyer, Fraeys de Veubeke was also considered a patriot and an army officer in both World Wars.

While Fraeys de Veubeke's prints tend to be small in size, they often resemble Misonne's images, and are quite beautiful little gems. His work is held by the FotoMuseum de Antwerp.

(My thanks to Benoit Fraeys de Veubeke, Lodovic's grandson, for providing some of the information above.)

Shipping and insurance costs will be added to the price and must be paid for by the buyer. Pennsylvania buyers must pay appropriate local sales tax. International clients are responsible for their VAT and other custom's oriented charges.
