About This Image

Photographer's signature reversed out of negative. Autographed by the dancer/ballerina. Toumanova was born in Russia, performed with the Paris Opera Ballet and the New York City ballet under famed choreographer George Ballantine. He "discovered" her for the Ballet Russe and made extensive use of her abilities on pointe in New York productions as well. She danced the lead in Swann Lake in 1942. She also danced the lead role in Cocteau's Phedre in Paris in 1950. She made her Broadway debut in the 1939 musical Stars in Your Eyes. Toumanova made her feature-film debut in Days of Glory (1943). She later starred in a number of films, including Casablanca, Deep in My Heart, and Torn Curtain. Maurice Seymour was the preeminent celebrity photography studio in Chicago and New York during the 1920s-1940s. There were actually two brothers: one ran the Chicago studio and the other operated the New York site. They used large format cameras, studio lighting and photographed the famous. They became the preferred photographers of ballet dancers.
