Such modernist Japanese images from the between-the-wars period are rare and highly sought-after. Shiihara has a biography in Anne Tucker's The History of Japanese Photography on p.359. She cites four other recent publications with photos and information on Shiihara published in Japan. He was a member of the Tampei Photography Club and produced a large body of experimental work using techniques, such as solarization, photograms, and combinations of photography and drawings that he dubbed "photo peinture", or photo paintings. After the war, he helped found the Speigel Photographers Association.
