About This Image

Photographer's stamp on verso. Otto Hagel (1909 - 1973) was a German born American photographer married to Hansel Meith. Both were documentary photo-journalists along the lines of Dorothea Lange, Imogen Cunningham, Peter Stackpole and Robert Capa. In the 50s they were blacklisted for refusing to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Hagel's work was included in Steichen's Family of Man at MOMA in 1955 and he published two books: Men and Ships: A Pictorial of the Maritime Industry (1937) and Men and Machines: A Story About Longshoring on the West Coast Waterfront (1963). He also shot numerous photo essays for LIFE and FORTUNE Magazines including one on the Heart Mountain Japanese American internment camp in 1943 and "The Simple Life" about his chicken farm in Santa Rosa California.

Shipping and insurance costs will be added to the price and must be paid for by the buyer. Pennsylvania buyers must pay appropriate local sales tax. International clients are responsible for their VAT and other custom's oriented charges.
