About This Image

In addition to bucolic vistas of pine forests and lakes, the group of well- and sensibly dressed professionals who are the main subjects of this album seem to have been interested in viniculture. We see them sampling wine mid-vinyard, and listening to lectures by one "Professor O. Haikinheimo" who holds a book on the location which they are most likely visiting: "Punkaharju," a beautiful narrow ridge of land between lakes Lake Puruvesi and Lake Pihlajavesi in Finland. The date here is July 8, 1927, but the region had only been declared the first conservation area in Finland in 1843. There are stately hall interiors and other edifying stops on the trip documented as well.

The album or the group may have come from Copenhagen, as a sticker reading "Illum -København" appears lower right, back cover. Verso of one photo is a stamp reading: "9. P. J. Bögelund 1927 Velox."
