About This Image

Paul Burty Haviland was born in Paris on June 17, 1880 as the son of a great American porcelain-maker in Limoges. While in New York between 1908 and 1915, Haviland became an influential member of the Photo-Secession. A faithful ally of Alfred Stieglitz in his struggle for the acknowledgment of photography and modern art, he himself left a body of high quality photographic works, which is yet to be widely published and is essentially composed of portraits, nudes and cityscapes, most of which was given to the Musée d'Orsay by Nicole Maritch-Haviland, the artist's daughter. Some of Haviland's work--nine images in all--was published by Stieglitz in Camera Work. Haviland himself was the chief judge of the influential 1910 Albright Art Gallery International Exhibition of Pictorial Photography in Buffalo, NY. He died in Yzeures-sur-Creuse, France on December 21, 1950. In 1996, the Musée d'Orsay published "Paul B. Haviland (1880-1950), Photographe" by Françoise Heilbrun and Quentin Bajac. Besides the Musée d'Orsay, his work is held by many institutions, including the Center for Creative Photography, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Crocker Art Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University, the National Museum of American Art, the National Portrait Gallery (Washington, D.C.), the University of Delaware, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Addison Gallery of American Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Worcester Art Museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Hallmark Photographic Collection, Princeton University, the International Center of Photography, the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the George Eastman House, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Magill Library at Haverford College, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, the Amon Carter Museum, the Museum fer Kunst und Gewerbe, and the National Gallery of Canada.

Shipping and insurance costs will be added to the price and must be paid for by the buyer. Pennsylvania buyers must pay appropriate local sales tax. International clients are responsible for their VAT and other custom's oriented charges.
