About This Image
A spectacular and very large photograph. Simply breathtaking. H. Peter Wingle was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1933, but the Colorado Mountains were his life and skiing and photography were his dual passions. He photographed skiing areas in the U.S. and Canada from the 1950s-1980s, but Colorado was his home. His photographs were used by Kodak in its advertising and his photos were used in the book, "The Skiers World", published by Random House in 1973.
On his own time he was an avid mountaineer who loved to climb remote peaks and descend on skis, but he had a monumental impact on the Colorado ski industry as the U.S. Forest Service's regional director of recreation. A lifelong Forest Service employee and well-respected Colorado skier and freelance photographer, Wingle loved skiing in the back country. He was also a director of the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association for many years. As a Forest Service employee, Wingle was in charge of recreation and lands for the state of Colorado. He helped shape the development of nearly every ski area in Colorado, including the very popular Steamboat Springs. He told the ultimate developers, "If you don't put a lift here and don't use this area, you're nuts."
Wingle was felled by a spinal tumor in January 1997 while skiing to Francie's Hut in Summit County, CO. The tumor was removed at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix on January 18, 1997, but Wingle died on June 23, 1997. He was 64. There has been a proposal to name a ridge near Vail Pass after Wingle, although it hasn't been scheduled for consideration by the U.S. Board of Geographic Names yet.
