Roberto Eichenberger, born in Guatemala in 1902, attended the Agfaphoto Schule in Berlin in the mid-1920s.
Back in Guatemala, he became a renowned portraitist, freelanced for National Geographic Magazine and was probably the first to use positive color film in Guatemala, during the mid-1930s. His wife, Mary Nicol Eichenberger, painstakingly hand tinted thousands of his photographs.
