Grambling Collage (now known as Grambling State Univerity) began as a rural agriculture program in 1896 by African American farmers, to educate other African Americans in the northern and western parts of the state. By 1944, the school was awarding cerified baccalaureate degrees in elementry education, and by 1946, it had become a mulitpurpose college, offering courses in the sciences, liberal arts and business.
