About This Image
Captioned on recto as follows: "The dream City from Governor's Island where many hopes are centered and objectives achieved; where sometimes aspirations are realized and egoistic pretensions deflated, as the myriads chase the Golden Fleece– where the towers of Mammon pierce the heavens and the subways are three deep– this is New York."
Numbered on verso 18150.
Provenance: Gift from artist to Grace Mayer (1959).
Gottscho's planned edition of 25 prints was never completed. Two complete sets of the 58 prints in "Manhattan Photographs" are known: this one, and a set that was purchased by Benjamin Riegel, "an industrialist," in 1933, as indicated by Gottscho's annotation to the volume given to Mayer.
