About This Image

An aesthetic and historic gem—part boosterism on the part of the French, and part diplomatic token—this album has nicely withstood the test of time. Most likely it was presented as a keepsake to various British Members of Parliament, some time after the Battle of Champagne. In it: German prisoners by the hundreds are led in convoys that stretch across the horizon; medical officers eat out of tin bowls in a mess tent. Also depicted is the luminous, whitewashed interior of a church, newly transformed into a medical facility, and an "Auto Colombier"--a transport bus full of carrier pigeons.

Album is bound by colored ribbon and embossed on the cover with title, photographic section, as well its ostensible, and illustrious, British owner—a barrister to the Crown and Member of Parlaiment: "Right Hon. C. B. Stuart Wortley, K.C., M.P." Some wear on edges of album cover. Mounts in very good condition.
