Starr Ockenga is a writer, photographer, designer, and educator. She received her MFA in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1974, and has been granted fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Massachusetts Artists Foundation. Formerly an associate professor of photography at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Director of the Creative Photography Laboratory, she currently operates a studio in Manhattan and gardens in upstate New York.
She has worked in many photographic formats including large, unique Polaroids, like this one, and the rare Fresson process. Her subjects have included nudes, children, portraits, still lifes and, of course, her work with plants and flowers.
Besides her many award-winning books on plants and gardening, Ockenga early on produced an important photo book on women entitled, "Mirror after Mirror: Reflections on Woman", which was published by Amphoto in 1976. Her work is included in the influential book, "Reflections: Woman's Self-Image in Contemporary Photography", published by Miami University and was shown at the Miami University Art Museum in 1988. T.B. Brazelton, M.D. wrote an article on Ockenga's work in the Polaroid Close-Up, Volume 14, Number 2, Winter 1983 issue, entitled, "Thoughts on Starr Ockenga's Pictures". Her photographs were also included in the Winter 1985 issue.
Her work is in the collections of the Harvard University Library and the Center for Creative Photography (Tucson), among many other institutions.
