Photographer's LIFE Magazine stamp and used in LIFE International January 27, 1964 stamp on verso. Spencer had an engineering degree from Birmingham University and was a RAF officer during WWII. He continued his flying after the war including starting a successful Aerial photography business in South Africa. In 1952 he began working as a freelance, then later contract, photographer for LIFE Magazine covering stories of war and various conflicts including the Congo Crisis, the horrors of apartheid, Vietnam, Middle East, Indochina and Cuba after the Bay of Pigs. He also photographed many musicians and celebrities including the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Katharine Hepburn, Richard Branson and Princess Grace, generally for LIFE, TIME and PEOPLE magazines. It Was Thirty Years Ago Today (Bloomsbury) came out in 1994 drawn from the thousands of photographs Spencer shot of the Beatles in the early days. In 2002 he and his wife, actress Lesley Brook co-authored, Living Dangerously (Percical),which was re-released and updated by his daughter, Cara, in 2012. Spencer died of cancer, aged 90, less than 24 hours after this wife of 62 years died.
