In 1919 Kikuchi returned to Japan after 15 years spent in the U.S. as a studio photographer (his New York studio, Kikuchi Studios, was located on Fifth Avenue, and was a commercial success), and set up the Oriental Photo Industry Co. Inc. This company produced photo printing paper and dry plate films, and was one of Japan's first major photographic supply manufacturers. As the official photographer for the Oriental, Kikuchi took most of the portraits used to show examples of the various photo papers manufactured by the company. He also published articles and literature on photographic technique.
