About This Image

Unique two page written manuscript by the noted Philadelphia daguerreotypist, together with a receipt for the purchase of rouge. Written in the hand of William Bell (1830-1910). Bell was a daguerreotypist in Philadelphia 1852-1860, and then became a partner of McClees. After the Civil War, Bell was chief Photographer for the Army Medical Museum, taking the now famous photographs of the war wounded. In 1872, Bell was the official photographer for the Wheeler Survey of the West. Late in his life Bell wrote a series of articles on photography of which these may have been his drafts. From the Bell Family, a gift to the Daguerreian Society Auction by David and Jane Turano-Thompson.
