About This Image

Hirogane graduated from Tokyo's Commercial High School in 1916 and began working for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagoya as General Affairs accountant. His professional career allowed him the luxury of pursuing photography. He printed in both silver gelatin and bromoil. His subject matter, both rural and industrial scenes, are presumed to have been photographed around Aichi prefecture. Hirogane's work is documented in "Art Photography in Japan, 1920–1940" by Peterson, Ross, et al, 2003.

Hirogane made important contributions to the Pictorialist movement in Japan between the Wars.
