About This Image

This image is from Bunka Shashin-shu, the magazine published by the Tokyo-based photo group Shashin Bunka Kyokai. The group held regular juried exhibitions that included work by leading Japanese pictorialists of the 1920s. Top selections were published in their magazine. This is plate 12 from volume 1.

Ohashi (1891-1941) was from Aichi, Japan. He became a member of the Aiyu Shashin Club in 1916, and was considered a master of the gum print format. He was highly esteemed for his pictoral landscapes, and was published in many leading art magazines and annuals of the early 1920s.

A different image by Ohashi is published in the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography catalog, "The Pictorial Landscape in Japanese Photography," plate 12.
