About This Image

Bing (1899-1998), whose contemporaries included Henri Cartier-Bresson and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, had a long and illustrious career as an important Modernist photographer. She was invited to New York in 1936, the same year she was included in a show of Modern photography at the Louvre.

As for the subject matter, captured by Bing on her first-ever NY trip, it was quite prescient. This selfsame Piemonte Ravioli store, specializing in fresh pasta products, continues to do business today at the location pictured by Bing in 1936, 190 Grand Street, on New York's Lower East Side. Above the store (in 1936) is a photo studio, evidenced by the marvelously shaped sign and the examples of photos in the second-story windows. Bright sunlight, slanting shadows, and architectural details like the fire escape and window cornices add to the image's echt, urban feel.

Signed in pen on verso: ILSE BING 1936, and in white on recto, lower left: ILSE BING 1936.

Please contact the gallery for a quote on shipping and insurance costs. If applicable, residents of New York will be charged sales tax. International clients will be responsible for their VAT. Please note that we do not ship internationally on items under $1,000.
