About This Image
Cuvelier along with his father Albert (also a photographer) studied painting as well as photography using a dry paper process. The influence of the Barbizon School (lead by Millet and Rousseau from 1830 to the 1870s) cannot be underestimated in its influence on Cuvelier's photographic style. Even Corot, the famous landscape painter, was Eugene's best man at his marriage to the daughter of a Barbizon innkeeper. See: Eugene Cuvelier; and Jammes and Parry-Janis, Art of the French Calotype, p.162 for more information on Cuvelier.
