About This Image

Wet stamped in black ink with title and facsimile of photographer's signature on recto of mount below print. Image is from the PLM album (Chemin de Fers de Paris a Lyon et a la Mediterranee), pl.7. A powerful image with the sweep of the viaduct dominating the image, but with the group of men at the right to give it all a sense of scale. The plaque on the right side of the arch indicates that this bridge, like many of the iron spans throughout the PLM network, was made in the iron foundries of Emile Martin & Cie. at Fourchambault, with George Martin as engineer. The plaque also gives the date 1855. Its design was modeled on that of the viaduct completed just shortly before at Tarascon.A copy is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
