About This Image

A moody image of two women walking up what looks like a snowy track to a waiting ship belching smoke. Signed on recto of image. Born in 1872, Mrs. Christine B. Fletcher was an active pictorialist and a member of the Photographic Society of San Francisco Pack Rats. She exhibited in all the major American and Canadian salons, as well as those in the UK and as far away as India. She lived in San Francisco, CA. Fletcher utilized the bromoil and bromoil transfer process in her work. She died July 13, 1961. Her work is in the collections of the Center for Creative Photography; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the National Museum of American Art; the National Museum of American History; the New Orleans Museum of Art; the Minneapolis Institute of Arts; the Saint Louis Art Museum; the George Eastman House; the Toledo Museum of Art; and the Photographic Society of America. She is cited in C. A. Peterson's After the Photo-Secession: American Pictorial Photography 1910-1955 and in Naomi Rosenblum's A History of Women Photographers.
