PHOTOGRAPHY COLLECTING SEMINAR Alan Klotz of Klotz/Sirmon Gallery has been offering photography collector seminars for a number of years now, although it was not until recently that I found out about them. The seminar is divided into three two to three hour sessions and uses actual photographs as examples, not slides. The first session includes an overview and brief history of the medium through a survey of imagery. The second session on connoisseurship touches on photographic processes, dating photographs by eye, identifying vintage prints, recognizing signatures and stamps, questions to ask before you buy, and the law and how it protects you as a buyer. The last session on the photographic marketplace tells attendees where and how to find photographs and information on them. The seminar is held at the new and spacious Klotz/Sirmon Gallery digs at 511 W25th St, #701, NYC, NY over the course of three consecutive weeks. The tuition is $250 per person or $400 per couple. BOOK ON ACROPOLIS I have recently received a number of newer books that you might want to consider for your photo book library, which I will be reviewing over the course of the next few newsletters. My friend Haris Yiakoumis has written a book on photographs of the Acropolis, entitled appropriately The Acropolis of Athens: Photographs 1839-1959. This is simply the best book on Greek photography that I have seen to date. The text is in English, Greek and French. It is 276 pages and includes 250 images in black and white and full color. There is a useful chronology of important events relating to the Acropolis that can help to date certain images. There is also an extensive bibliography on the Acropolis that is broken out into books before the invention of photography (sort of) and books after the invention of photography. There is extensive information on the various artists who have photographed the Acropolis, including the well-known and more obscure. All in all, this is a great reference for any photo collector or scholar with an interest in Greece and the Acropolis in particular.
