Swann Schedules Auction On October 19th

Swann Auction Galleries' Tuesday, October 19th sale of Important 19th & 20th Century Photographs will be held at 10:30 am.

The sale features 19th-century work, including an album of Civil War carte-de-visites of Union Generals and President Lincoln ($25,000/$35,000) and the earliest known photograph of George Armstrong Custer in military uniform, a sixth-plate ruby ambrotype, 1861 ($25,000/$35,000).

The auction will also have some top early 20th-century images, including Eduard Steichen's classic Henri Matisse with "La Serpentina," Issy-les-Moulineaux, France, in a platinum print, 1909 ($20,000/$30,000); A.L. Coburn's study of Matisse, circa 1910 ($15,000/$25,000); and a signed large-format photogravure on Japan tissue of Edward S. Curtis's Waiting in the Forest, Cheyenne, 1910 ($20,000/$35,000).

Between-the-war photographs in the sale include a Man Ray, Gertrude Stein, 1922, ex-collection Alice B. Toklas ($12,000/$18,000); an oversized print of Ansel Adams's Moon and Half Dome ($20,000/$30,000); and Walker Evans, Bethlehem, Graveyard and Steel Mill, 1935, printed circa 1944 ($15,000/$25,000).

Two important printed-later portfolios also offered for sale will be Walker Evans' portfolio with 14 prints, 1971 ($40,000/$60,000) and Berenice Abbott's New York portfolio with 12 prints ($30,000/$40,000).

Special Events that will be held in conjunction with the auction include a book signing by Janet Russek and David Scheinbaum, which will feature their new book, Images in the Heavens, Patterns on the Earth: The I Ching.
