Photo Review Auction Held Nov. 6th At Philadelphia's Univ. of The Arts

The Photo Review, a critical journal of photography, will hold its Annual Benefit Auction on Saturday, November 6 at 7 pm in Hamilton Hall at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

The event will feature an international slate of photographers as well as a host of Philadelphia artists. Beginning and experienced collectors alike will have the opportunity to bid on work by such historic masters as Edward S. Curtis, Nell Dorr, Kusakabe Kimbei, Nathan Lyons, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Man Ray, Herb Ritts, George Seeley, Carleton E. Watkins, Alfred Cheney Johnston, Jaroslav Rossler and Weegee.

Among the contemporary photo stars whose work will go on the block are Andrew Borowiec, Marilyn Bridges, Lucien Clergue, Mark Citret, Larry Fink, Lois Greenfield, Jefferson Hayman, Chip Hooper, Henry Horenstein, Michael Kenna, Elaine Ling, David Maisel, Rania Matar, Joe Mills, Jeffrey Milstein, Lori Nix, Bill Owens, Orville Robertson, Lynn Saville, Jack Spencer, Catherine Steinmann, Maggie Taylor, George Tice, Jonathan Torgovnik, Jerry N. Uelsmann, Hiroshi Watanabe, and Joel-Peter Witkin.

Featured local luminaries include Susan Abrams, Andrea Baldeck, Susan Bank, Ricardo Barros, Rita Bernstein, Paul Cava, Vincent David Feldman, Judy Gelles, David Graham, Nancy Hellebrand, Catherine Jansen, Jenny Lynn, Wendy Paton, Amie Potsic, Stuart Rome, Laurence Salzmann, Leif Skoogfors, Stephen G. Williams, and Frank Yamrus.

There are photographs of both FDR and Harry Truman throwing out the first pitch of the baseball season, as well as prints of several Pulitzer Prize-winning photographs, among them John Filo's searing 1970 photo of the Kent State shootings, Yasushi Nagao's picture of the assassination of a Japanese Nationalist leader and Kyoichi Sawada's image of a fleeing Vietnamese family.

In addition, a broad range of 19th-century photographs is up for bid.

According to Photo Review editor Stephen Perloff, prices will range from $50 to $8,000.

A silent auction, concurrent with the live auction, will feature photography and computer equipment and software, inkjet paper, restaurant meals, museum memberships, theater tickets, books, jewelry, etc.

A preview will be held at Hamilton Hall on Friday, November 5 from 11 am-5 pm, and on Saturday, November 6, from 11 am-6 pm, just prior to the auction. Proceeds from the auction, a popular event since 1983, fund such activities as an annual juried competition for emerging photographers.
