Soler Y Llach to Hold Two-Session Photo Auction of 470 Lots On Dec. 15th

Soler y Llach's photography department will hold an auction on December 15, 2010 in Barcelona, Spain, which will be divided into two sessions. You can see the on-line catalogue at: http://www.soleryllach.com . Choose your language and then note that there are two catalogues of photography that you can review on line or as a pdf file.

The first session of Photography will start at 6 pm local time. This session will focus on contemporary photography of the last 40 years or so, including portraits, landscapes, etc. It will include 86 photographs.

Some of the key images include: Puerto Rico woman with beauty mark, 1969, by Diane Arbus; Thomas, 1986 Robert Mapplethorpe; Soeur Rosalba, 1991, by Andres Serrano; Tommy, Simson and mask, 2000, Roger Ballen and other images by Joan Colom, Marina Abramovic, Thomas Struth, Antoni Miralda, Elina Brotherus, Gunther Forg, Jeffrey Milstein, Bill Durgin, Sandy Skoglund, Nan Goldin, Orlan, Pierre Gonnord, William Klein, Martin Parr, Xavier Ribas, Karen Knorr, Joan Fontcuberta, Nicholas Nixon, etc. Estimates on these range from 1000 to 40000 euro.

The second session, which will start at 7 pm (local time), consists of 384 lots of photographs and photo books, among them a daguerreotype of a dancer from La Escuela Bolera which was made circa 1845. It has an estimate of 60000-80000 euro. This is the first daguerreotype photographic representation known of a flamenco dancer and any other type of Spanish dance. The rest of the 19th-century lots include photographs by Charles Clifford, Francis Frith, Louis de Clercq and Robert Peters Napper, among others.

The 20th-century section includes between-the-wars modern photography from Antoni Arissa, Pere Català Pic, Josep Sala, Alexander Klebnikov, Theodore Roszak, Josef Vorisek, etc. Photographs by Robert Capa, Agustí Centelles, the Mayo brothers and others are included in the section on the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939.

The 1950s starts with photographs by Herbert List, Robert Doisneau, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Rene Burri, Ramón Masats and Philippe Halsmann. There is a section on domestic portraits of Pablo Picasso; one of them was taken by his wife Jacqueline Picasso. There is also one of the few series that have been preserved of portraits of Ernesto Che Guevara, composed of 15 vintage photographs by Mexican photographer Rodrigo Moya and made in 1963. There is also a Rene Burri image of Che.

In the section on publications and photo books you can find "Sumo" by Helmut Newton, "L'Ange Heuterbise" by Man Ray and Jean Cocteau, "Ein im Ghetto Wilna Moi Oste-View", 'Images a La Sauvette", "Les Européens" and "Flagrants delist" (signed and dedicated copies) by Henri Cartier-Bresson, "Les erotique du regard by Marc Attali and Jacques Delfau and "Beard Pond" by Bruce Weber, among others.

The preview in Barcelona will be at C/Beethoven 13, Dec. 13 and 14, Monday and Tuesday, from 9:30-1:30 pm and 3-7 pm; and Dec. 15, Wednesday, from 9:30-3 pm. The auction itself will start on Dec. 15, Wednesday, beginning at 6 pm.
