Charles Schwartz will be in booth #423 at the AIPAD photography show. Schwartz will have an eclectic selection of 19th- and 20th-century photographs, including Japanese photographs from both centuries. Early Japanese ambrotypes will be on view, as well as rare 1930s vintage prints of Bunraku Puppet Theater performers by Taikichi Irie.
Schwartz will show several important 19th-century prints, including W.G. Campbell’s "The Lesson" (1857) and a very rare portrait by Victor Prevost of six of the men responsible for the creation of Central Park (1862).
Representing the 20th century will be work by W. Eugene Smith, Lee Friedlander, Ilse Bing and Ralph Steiner, among others. As in past years, Schwartz will have a collection of 19th-century cased images on view.

The company will feature photography masterworks from both the 19th and 20th-centuries in booth #107.
Key 19th-century pieces will include a small group of very rare images by Julia Margaret Cameron. Two of the images are known to exist in only one or two copies. One is a scarce image of Julia Duckworth, who was one of Cameron's favorite models. Cameron's own son H. H. Hay Cameron, who was also a photographer, is part of this selection of her portraits.
Other important 19th-century photographers represented include most of the major French masters, including Gustave Le Gray, Charles Nègre, Henri Le Secq and Bisson Frères, among others.
Examples of Le Gray's work include several lovely seascapes, early Mission Heliographique salt prints, and important military scenes from Chalon, as well as a very rare daguerreotype by Le Gray and his partner Auguste Mestral.
Charles Nègre's work will include an imposing, moody frontal view of Notre-Dame, Paris; several rare hanging game studies; numerous scenes in Provence; as well as a huge salt print of the north side of Chartres cathedral, which was the actual print used for an equally large heliogravure produced from it.
There are also rare Henri Le Secq's images of the cathedrals at Paris, Chartres, Amiens, Strasbourg (Notre Dame) and Rheims, as well as a selection of calotype prints of base reliefs from Rouen Cathedral. Henri Le Secq was one of the most gifted early photographers to record architecture and sculpture.
The first photographic expedition by Rosalie Auguste Bisson (Bisson young) in the Chamonix valley took place during the summer of 1858. Never before had a photograph of this large size been taken at such high altitude: 2,882 meters. A print of this photograph was exhibited at the Société française de photographie in the winter of 1858-1859. Three of these fine prints will be on display, featuring Mont-Blanc and its glaciers.
Turn-of-the-century work includes a pair of rare images by Jean-Francois Limet of Auguste Rodin's sculptures. In 1900, after Rodin and his photographer of the period, Eugène Druet, had temporarily fallen out while preparing for the exhibition in the Pavillon de l'Alma, Jean Francois Limet, another amateur photographer and the patinator of Rodin's bronzes, was commissioned by Rodin to take the photographs to be published in his catalogue. The remarkable fruits of Limet's investigations into color can be seen in his bichromated-gelatin prints. To tone his photographs, he used almost the same products as those he employed for his patinas of Rodin's sculptures.
Other early 1900s photographs include a strong group by Eugene Atget, which are comprised of architectural details, landscapes and Paris buildings.
Twentieth-century masterworks will feature a spectacular large and early exhibition print by Edward Weston of Maud Adams with Century Plant from 1915. This platinum print was exhibited in Pictorial Photography in Britain 1900-1920, Arts Council of Great Britain, 1978.
André Kertész is represented this year with a group of nude distortions from his Paris years, as well as several important early prints of some of his most well known images. A unique oversized (30 x 23-1/2 in.) print of his Pont des Arts, Paris, will be on display.
Important photographs by Germaine Krull, Brassai, Horst, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Baron Adolph De Meyer, Erwin Blumenfeld, Aaron Siskind and others will also be on offer.

Susan Herzig and Paul Hertzmann, who will be exhibiting in booth #108, are representing the Princeton University Art Museum in the sale of 18 photographs from their Minor White Archive. The group includes a fine, elegant nude of Tom Murphy, the classic "Two Barns and Shadow, Dansville, New York"; a "Burned Truck Side", 1973, which has not been seen on the market before and other images from 1947 through the 1960's. The couple will also be hanging an excellent mounted, signed, vintage print of Minor White's "Easter Sunday, Stony Brook State Park".
Other wall photographs will include a stunning 1940's sand dune by Laura Gilpin; an uncommon Nebraskan landscape by Wright Morris; a rare vintage Ansel Adams from the middle 1930's titled "Burned Stump and New Grass, Sierra Nevada"; a beautiful albumen print by John Hillers of his most important portrait, "Modesi, a Moki Girl", 1879; three Edward Westons--Panchito, an important Mexican period palladium and two 1930's small format nudes; "Inauguration Day", 1956, an oversized Robert Frank; "Aztec Baby", a mounted, signed Tina Modotti of a nursing Mexican mother; Paul Outerbridge's mounted, signed, platinum gem of "Hatboxes"; an oversized vintage Harry Callahan, "Multiple Exposure, Tree, Chicago," 1956 and other new acquisitions of 20th-century photography.
Among discoveries to be found in their bins, will be a large group of 25 very attractively priced Michael Kennas, including many from sold-out editions. Interested collectors can request a list in advance.
