Art Gallery Ontario Names Julian Cox New Deputy Director
Julian Cox
Julian Cox

Julian Cox, the chief curator and founding photography curator of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, has been appointed chief curator and deputy director of the AGO. He will take up the post in early January.

As chief curator, Cox assumes oversight of all of the gallery’s exhibitions and content. His predecessor, Stephanie Smith, left the gallery in October 2016. She had been in the position only two years.

Cox has previously been a photography curator at the J. Paul Getty Museum and head photography curator at the High Museum in Atlanta. He co-authored "Julia Margaret Cameron: The Complete Photographs".

In the late 1990s, while at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, Cox co-organized photography exhibitions presented at the AGO from artists Man Ray and Julia Margaret Cameron, so he has some familiarity with the institution.
